TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING ~ NATALIA ANJA

Traveling provides us with a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in another world - to eat food we have never tried, to attempt languages we have not heard of, and to see things we never could have imagined.

This often means abandoning routine and living at a different pace than we are used to - staying up late, getting up early and enjoying local delicacies. Taking an occasional break from a schedule is good for you, but indulging a bit too much and straying from your usual routine can eventually take a toll on your overall health.

Natalia Anja - a photographer and avid traveller knows a thing or two about the importance of being health conscious while being away from home. Natalia traveled through 41 countries with the Discovery Digital Network’s feature, “Global Degree.” After becoming ill during her travels, Natalia decided to find a way to adopt a healthier lifestyle when traveling. Here’s her story:

When I was in Asia for 8 months I was sick for a significant duration of the trip. I experienced everything from a basic cold, to a stomach and bacteria infection. I never felt 100% healthy.

This affected my exercise regime, eating habits, and I felt my energy level was very low. As a result of this experience, I became motivated to find a way to maintain a healthy lifestyle while traveling.

I am addicted to adventure and I love exploring and stepping outside my comfort zone. I truly believe that traveling is the best form of education, especially because it forces you to deal with situations you’re not dealing with in everyday life at home. I also think it’s really important to spend time in nature or in a foreign place, it’s both energizing and humbling.

People often ask me to name one of my favourite travel destination. In all honesty, each place is special, but here are a few countries that have left a big imprint on my heart.

Mongolia: We drove a van through the Gobi desert for 10 days. In those 10 days we met an eagle hunter, rode semi-wild horses and camels, stayed with nomadic families in their yurts, climbed sand dunes and played board games made from animal bones. We regularly woke up to milk yaks with our host family, and herded goats after dinner. It truly is a special place.

Philippines: This cluster of islands is one big tropical paradise with lovely people and fresh food! We snorkelled with whale sharks, island hopped around El Nido, played beach volleyball with the locals and did one of the coolest hikes I’ve ever done called, Mt. Taraw.

Portugal: I spent the most amount of time here in my travels and it is very close to my heart. I was by myself for a big portion of the time and have never felt more at home while being away. I kayaked to the beaches, went for lots of long runs, attempted to surf, and went skydiving for the first time in Algarve.

Natalia’s top 5 tips for maintaining your overall health while traveling

1. Hydration, hydration, hydration: Make sure to drink lots of water.

2. Keep healthy snacks everywhere - in your hotel room, on the plane, in your bag.

3. Keep moving: I love running in new places because it not only keeps me active and fit, but it’s an amazing way to see a new place, and really allows me to get lost. If running isn’t your thing, walk and explore a new neighbourhood or city.

4. Eat as much fresh, local fruit and veggies as you can!

5. Supplements: I bring health products that are easy to travel with such as withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen stick packs and my Hyperbiotics probiotics that don’t need to be refrigerated. Saje Wellness offers a really great remedy bar and I usually bring the ‘Immune Remedy’, a virus fighting blend that helps fortify the body, relieving cold and flu-like symptoms.

I started taking withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen two weeks before my 3 month trip to Europe and it was life-changing for me. I used to have a lot of pain in my hands, wrists and knees, but taking withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen made a drastic difference. I find I’m able to run longer- pain free - and I can hold my camera without so much pain in my wrists.

I love coffee and enjoy trying new/local coffee wherever I am in the world. It’s so easy to grab a withinUs stick pack and stir it up in my cup of java and keep up my daily routine even when away. It is super convenient and the stick packs are light and don’t take up much space in my luggage.

Traveling is fun and vacations are not necessarily the time to be on your best behaviour. Whether you travel for work or pleasure, incorporating simple, healthy habits while traveling will help you enjoy it more.
