Below we have listed a few key factors in identifying high quality collagen products. 

SOURCE

One of the main factors in determining the quality of a collagen product is the raw material source. Collagen can only be sourced from animals such as cows, pigs, chicken, and fish (never from plant-based sources). Marine collagen is considered to be the most premium source of collagen and wild-sourced is considered more favorable than farmed sourced.  Independent clinical studies have proven that marine collagen sourced specifically from fish scales has higher bioavailability than other collagen sources. Bioavailability is a fancy word to describe how effectively the product is absorbed into the bloodstream. 

The source of collagen also affects the product's purity. Collagen products sourced from land animals have a greater risk for impurities as oils from the skin and bones, which can be found in the final product.  This is also true with collagen sourced from fish skin, as this is where the oils are found. Impurities affect the color (i.e. yellow), smell and taste of the final product, which is why many collagen products on the market are flavored or sweetened.  

GRADE

As with many products, there are various grades available.  Marine collagen is graded as follows:

LOW GRADE - fish skin collagen

MID-GRADE - mix of fish skin and scale

PREMIUM GRADE - exclusively fish scale (no skin)

withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen is a premium-select grade collagen, sourced exclusively from the scales of sustainable, wild-caught fish - fish scales are a very pure, clean, abundant source of collagen.  In addition, withinUs TruMarine Collagen is stringently tested for impurities and contaminants, including lead and mercury.  As a result, our product is Ultra-Pure - dissolving crystal clear and virtually tasteless and odorless.  

The daily recommended serving is 5 grams (1 scoop), which is less than half the recommended dosage of other collagen products. Our greater absorption rate/bioavailability means fewer grams daily for more benefits.

BIOAVAILABILITY

We talked a little bit about bioavailability already, but this is such an important factor, that we want to expand with more detail.

The source of the raw material plays an important role in bioavailability (wild fish scale vs other sources), but it is not the only contributing factor. The molecular weight of a product is also important; this refers to how 'broken down' the product is, think of it as 'pre-digested.' The less work your body has to do to break down the product, the easier (and quicker) it is to absorb.

withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen is broken down using a natural enzymatic hydrolyzation process. Using enzymes rather than harsh acids or heat to break down the marine collagen produces a low molecular weight - about 3000-5000 Daltons - which makes the product highly bioavailable. Other popular consumable sources of collagen, and even bone broth, cartilage and fish skin, have a much higher molecular weight, making it difficult for the body to break down and absorb effectively. The hydrolyzation process that withinUs TruMarine™ Collagen undergoes is an important process that ensures maximum absorption, allowing your body to utilize as much of the product as possible.
