Why withinUs Built a Functional Electrolyte in 2018
I was 45 and not drinking enough water.
That sounds simple. It was not. I knew I was dehydrated. I knew the symptoms. I just did not want to drink plain water all day, and everything else on the market was making the problem worse, not better.
The sports drinks on grocery store shelves looked like hydration. They were not. They were celebrity-backed, brightly coloured, artificially flavoured sugar drinks shelved next to sodas because that is exactly what they were. The marketing was loud. The ingredients were not something I could stand behind.
I had been deep in the research on collagen for years by that point. I understood what TruMarine Collagen could do for the body. I also understood that the window to build something genuinely high-quality in this space was not going to stay open. The big corporations were watching. They would eventually move in, copy the concept, and do it at scale with lower-quality ingredients and less integrity behind the formula. I wanted to build the real version before they built the imitation.
So in July 2018, we launched ReHydrate + TruMarine Collagen in certified organic lemon. It started as the first ReHydrate product, one flavour, one jar. A formula I still drink every day.
Nothing in that formula was an accident. The 1 gram of organic cane sugar is not there for sweetness. It is the mechanism that allows electrolytes to be absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream. Remove it, and make it sugar-free, and the formula does not work the way it needs to. The electrolyte balance was calibrated, not maxed out. The ingredients are ones I can pronounce and explain. Taste was not negotiable either. A product that is good for you but unpleasant to drink does not get used.

When we first launched, our margins were thin. We barely made money on it. I knew that going in. I had a longer view: if we built something people could trust, they would find it, try it, love it, and tell others. Production would scale. Margins would follow. That is exactly what happened.
ReHydrate + TruMarine Collagen has a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada. That is not a logo or a badge. It means the formula was reviewed, the health claims were assessed, and the product was approved by a federal regulator. Most electrolyte drinks on the market do not have one. ReHydrate is also third-party tested, meaning an independent lab has verified that what is on the label is what is in the product. No hidden fillers, no underdosed ingredients, no proprietary blends designed to obscure what you are actually buying.
The category has become noisy since we launched in 2018. There are more options, more claims, more colourful packaging. Most of it is noise.
We innovated ReHydrate before the noise started, the same way we offered TruMarine Collagen, and we have not changed what matters: the integrity of the formula, the quality of the ingredients, and the transparency we hold ourselves to.
